How Cannabis Oil Works

The effect of cannabis oil depends on the compound THC, HHC, or CBD — the active ingredients found in cannabis.
Cannabis oil is a plant extract derived from cannabis. In its pure form, it is thick and sticky, so it is often diluted with a carrier oil such as MCT oil.
It’s usually mixed in various concentrations so that the correct dose can easily be taken, depending on the user’s needs.

How is Cannabis Oil Made?

There are generally two methods for producing cannabis oil that contains THC:
the cold method and the warm method.

Cold method:
The cannabis oil is extracted at a low temperature and is not decarboxylated.
Decarboxylation is the process of heating cannabis or cannabis oil so that THCA turns into THC.
THCA is the natural compound found in cannabis, while THC is only created after heating.
You cannot get high from raw cannabis because it contains almost no THC, only THCA.
Only THC has psychoactive effects — THCA does not, although it has many positive properties.
This results in THCA oil.

Warm method:
In this process, the cannabis is heated for one hour at 115°C (239°F).
This converts THCA into THC, giving the oil its psychoactive effect.
When cannabis is smoked, the burning itself provides enough heat for this conversion.
The result is THC oil, which is the most common type of cannabis oil available on the market.

How to Use Cannabis Oil for the Best Effect

You can take cannabis oil by placing a few drops under your tongue and swallowing after about one minute.
It’s also possible to mix it with food or drinks, but it may take 30 to 90 minutes before you feel any effect.
The full effect may take up to 2 hours to appear and can last for 3 to 5 hours.

You may take cannabis oil as often as you feel necessary — most people use it 1 to 4 times per day.
If you use it to improve sleep, take it about 2 hours before going to bed.

Depending on the HHC concentration of the oil, 1 to 7 drops per dose are usually sufficient.
Most people take 3 to 5 drops of the strong variant each time.

It’s recommended to start with 1 drop and wait 2 hours before taking more.
Then, you can gradually increase your dosage every 2 hours until you begin to feel the desired effect.
It’s important to find your personal optimal dosage — don’t stop increasing too early, or the oil may not work properly.

Can You Take Cannabis Oil on Vacation?

You cannot always take cannabis oil abroad.
In the Netherlands, HHC and CBD oil can be used without any problem, but other countries may have different regulations.
